When my boys were old enough to write, they started making handmade cards for birthdays and holidays. Inside, they included an elaborate “coupon” redeemable for some favor, activity or chore. It was always very simple and timely to what was going on that year. The coupons ranged from shopping or lunch dates to market runs, dog walking and even foot rubs. My favorites were the personal ones, like a video or a song. Half the fun was seeing what they came up with each time. The more outrageous coupons included a caveat in tiny writing – “restrictions apply”. I’ve saved them all. To this day, at 22 and 19, the tradition continues.
