I recently found an old article in Veranda magazine on one of my favorite designers, Darryl Carter. In it, he gives well-advised design tips to creating the seamless, serene rooms he is well-known for pairing white interiors with both antiques and contemporary elements. This is a small sampling of the incredible work he has done. For a visual treat, take a look at his website portfolio, or enjoy his lovely books. I have both of his books and go back to them frequently for design inspiration.
Carter’s tips…
1. Pick paint first…”It’s a way to harmonize a house in its entirety.” Next, choose textiles that preferably blend with and complement the walls.
2. Let architecture shine in white. By painting everything the same color, a subtle architectural element has been added to the space.
3. Cream can be kid friendly. “Try enamel finishes and high-gloss paint in high-traffic areas, as well as durable faux leather and outdoor fabrics for upholstered pieces.”
4. Create continuity for your kids, too. Integrate children’s room to the larger experience of the home…”They’re going to grow up there,” says Carter.
5. A white backdrop makes antiques feel modern. Neutral paint showcases them in a sculptural way and adds an avant grade touch.
6. Use white to create contrast between old and new. White walls provide the perfect backdrop for primitive architectural elements and gives a room a modern sensibility.
7. Experiment with finishes…”A material change in the same color can be a very subtle way to articulate the architecture of a space.”
8. Revamp old pieces with a coat of paint. Don’t be afraid to change the look of a piece of furniture by painting it to give it a new life.
9. Be consistent, inside and out. To give the house above, a sense of what the interiors will reveal, Carter painted the house, then power washed it to expose some of the original brick. It’s a complete transformation of the exterior of the home and creates the seamless design element he insists on.
