Emmanuelle Alt has a cult following. There are websites, blogs and Pinterest sites named after her and a swarm of photographers that capture her every move. And yet, she might be the most low-key fashion editor around. The appeal is in her no-nonsense approach to life, work and fashion that so many women can relate to. The Telegraph ran a great interview on Monday that is well worth reading and will undoubtedly perpetuate her understated modus operandi.
A few favorite quotes:
On aging: Alt “will never be heard to say a woman is too old to appear in Vogue.”
On personal style: She “makes fashion look easy, a matter of getting dressed rather than dressed up.”
On image: “A good attitude for a woman is to be confident, and to be confident is to be natural.”
On work at Vogue Paris: “Alt is not interested in shocking (editorials)…I think we have seen so much of [sex] that we can’t see it anymore.” The luxurious and expensive things photographed for editorials goes with an age. The magazine is not “a vehicle for youth.”
On working mothers: Her kids have always “seen me leaving for work smiling. It’s a gift to your kids…the association of work and happiness.”
On life: “When you’re in good health you can deal with the rest…I don’t get my happiness from collecting shoes.”
