I don’t think I’m speaking too soon to say Riccardo Tisci‘s Givenchy SS16 show, staged with the lower Manhattan skyline, specifically the Freedom Tower, as a backdrop, will probably go down as the best of NYFW. Nature’s beauty provided a moody blue sky when the show began at sundown on the anniversary of September 11. The atmospheric, open setting on Pier 26 in Tribeca, designed with recycled materials and scrap metal, set the mood combined with a multi-cultural mix of music celebrating Tisci’s theme of remembering the past while looking towards the future. I think the top, middle photo of Joan Smalls above, stepping up to the runway in an insanely gorgeous black gown sums up the mood and air of the show…magical. Although I personally don’t have the lifestyle or purpose to wear anything near the extravagance of the collection, it’s hard not to appreciate and admire the workmanship and attention to detail that go into creating such magnificent pieces.
