Initially, I dismissed the bomber jacket as too young and too gimmicky for my taste. I’ve seen plenty of versions that are exactly that. But, when you take away the varsity jacket and aviator flight jacket details that caused my dislike – you’re left with a clean, collarless jacket that can be worn with a myriad of things.
I’ve picked a few favorites that I like at the moment from luxurious lambskin to simple zip-ups. I’ll pass on anything supersized or padded. I’m looking for something pared back as much as possible to just the silhouette. The shearling in the top left photo from a 2012 fashion show is unavailable, but I’m using the styling as inspiration. Dressed up with satin track pants and a sequined top is so chic and modern. I also like the ease of tossing a bomber over a skirt like Giorgia Tordini or wide leg pants and sneakers. It may turn out to be a very versatile jacket after all.
The Row leather bomber is pure luxe and a forever piece.
The green Top Shop bomber has a more sporty feel than the others but still manages to avoid cliché details.
I also like this embroidered option from Dries Van Noten.
