I love when a home offers an element of surprise with unpredictable, carefully selected pieces. Either curated over years of collecting or custom-made, I appreciate more and more that special story a house tells with furniture, art and lighting that doesn’t appear immediately identifiable or easily procured on the internet. There’s so much more personality with unique pieces. This rural home in Connecticut, designed by India Mahdavi, reveals such a story. The clients requested the sophisticatication you would find in the city translated to a country lifestyle for their young family with comfort being a top priority. That, and a place to house their growing art collection. With furnishings from Jean Royère and André Arbus mixed with the designer’s pieces of her own design, the home reads as both glamorous and casual, not an easy feat. Pops of color throughout, predominantly lemon as seen in semi-circular sofas, a ceramic table base, the interior of a large-scale pendant and blanket in the master bedroom, serve as a reminder that the owners wanted more than just a traditional, white country home. The transition from the rugged wood planked exterior of the “games barn” to the sophisticated interior, with wall-sized Sol LeWitt art amidst ping pong, billiard and foosball tables, essentially sums up the distinctive mix of cultured city taste with country relaxed ease.
