September always feels like a new beginning. Even more so than January for me. It has always been time to shift gears for the new season, although we have minimal change in California. In my mind, I put summer behind me and make plans for the fall. I do a thorough cleanse of my closet and look for voids to add new pieces that will update my wardrobe or replace essentials that look tired.
Right now, my thoughts are on cleaning up a bit…not just my closet, but my look. I’ll still wear denim all the time, because that fits my lifestyle, but I’m going to make the effort to mix it up and add some polish. Maybe it stems from dressing casual all summer, but every September I dream about getting dressed in new fall pieces…often way too warm to ever wear here. With that in mind, I’m enjoying a range of fall picks in a palette of black and white, in fluid fabrics that feel perfect for California. There’s nothing too heavy here and all can be paired back with denim, which of course I will do.
Sandals for fall? Why not, as long as they have some weight. Black is an obviuos preference. Flowing pants are a must for fall and I have my eye on Theory’s relaxed, track style. They’re perfect puddled over flat sandals, sneakers or chunky heeled loafers. Although it won’t work for everyone, layering various proportions, especially tunics or longer length dresses over pants is at the moment, the most modern way to look very chic. A slouchy bag, in suede, buttery leather or velvet compliments this style nicely. An unstructured bomber, preferably in leather, adds another layer of softness and is on the top of my fall wish list. As a matter of fact, every piece here is on my list and as the season progresses, I’ll add my other favorite colors, beige, navy and grey to add warmth and depth.
