Waistlines have been moving up for several seasons, but I never really found a head-to-toe look that suited me. It took some adjustment in my mind, and in my closet, to play around with pieces until I landed on a couple of formulas I could work with.
First off, a higher waist begs for a tucked in shirt, which I’m loving lately. It instantly reads pulled together and feels fresh. It can be slim fitting like the top above or a loose blouse. They both work. The other option is a cropped silhouette. I’ve never really paid attention to them until now, thinking they would bare skin. But if the length is right and the waist is high, it’s a great combination. Now, I’m on the hunt for cropped tops to add to my closet to gain more mileage from high waist pants.
I’d love to find a dark denim pair like the ones above (from Claudie Pierlot). They’re so on point with the self belt and pleats, yes, pleats! Meanwhile, I’m happy with my Helmut Lang khakis from several seasons ago (similar here) and a Theory cropped black linen, also in white (both on sale!). And, I got lucky and just added a Dries Van Noten cuffed trouser I’ve had my eye on this season, on sale.

A high waist and full leg and not for everybody….by which I mean, every body. You have to be tall and slim like you to pull it off!

Thanks for your comment. I can see where a very full leg might overwhelm a petite frame, but I think a high waist is doable, especially with a slim to tapered leg like in the photo above. I happen to just run across this article from refinery29 on exactly this subject.

How beautiful is that top too !?!!!
