A denim shirt, the other denim essential besides jeans, is the easiest transformative piece of the season. Granted, its been around forever, and you may already own one or two, but if it’s stuffed in the back of your closet, now is the time to pull it out and wear it…with everything.
I like a denim shirt in all styles and fabrications from western inspired to smooth chambray. I raided my son’s closet and found a loose, oversized style that works well for a casual, slouchy look that I’ve been wearing with my jeans…the Canadian Tuxedo is actually looking pretty chic!
But not to stop there, I’m also grabbing one of my denim shirts to wear with unexpected pieces, like the checked trousers above, a pleated skirt or under a velvet blazer. It makes for a wise travel companion too looking good layered over a tee or turtleneck, subbing in as a lightweight jacket, tied at the waist and on its own. I recently added the J. Crew western, above, and a Levi’s vintage version to my mini collection. I sized way up on both to achieve a look like Annina Mislin

You look fabulous – great pants too. When you size “up” – how many sizes from your normal size do you go up? I’m always a bit confused about that.

I sized WAY up on the J Crew western shirt. It fits true to size and I’m normally a size 8 but purchased a 12. I wanted it to really hang on me and not have any restrictions on the shoulders.
