As much as I LOVE pouring through fall editorials, I’ve come to terms accepting that the majority of the looks are purely inspirational. I can dream about gorgeous coats, thick sweaters and shearling-lined over the knee boots (thank you Celine), but the reality is California’s climate doesn’t warrant such purchases. With that in mind, I keep a keen eye open for specific details and a general mood of the season that I know I’ll be able to interpret for my lifestyle.
A beautiful Naomi Smith styled editorial in the September issue of Harper’s Bazaar Australia gave me plenty to ponder. For starters, the tailored separates above worn with a sandal is completely relatable. That Balenciaga blazer is everything. Combining a boxy, oversized silhouette with a uniquely exaggerated shoulder detail is just so fresh. It’s a natural to pair with sweeping trousers and a tucked-in blouse. I’d just as quickly toss it on over a slip dress too.
The color combo in these Fendi pieces is stunning for a transitional look. The contrast of a soft blush with stark black is simply chic. I also like the feminine details of a fluid knife-pleated skirt worn with a lug-sole, laced-up boot. For warmer days, a loafer or sandal would do the trick with equal panache.
A simple blouse with trousers is nothing new, but the details now make all the difference. I like a buttoned-up, high neck with some sort of flourish – softly tied or ruffled collars are my favorite. Particularly for California weather, when a jacket or sweater isn’t required, a belt is a must. This season, in particular, is the perfect time to stock up on some interesting styles. Basic is fine, but a belt with even the slightest detail, like the contrast trim above, is especially covetable and completes an outfit with polish.
I may not have the opportunity to wear a heavy coat, but a trench is a closet staple. It may not be in rotation very often but I’m always glad I have one when needed. Plus, I consider it an essential piece in the perfect capsule travel wardrobe. Equally important for the season (and in my opinion, forever) is a lace-up combat style boot. It’s another absolute on every one of my fall/winter packing lists. There will be plenty to choose from this season, so if you’ve never jumped on board, now’s the time.
