Leggings may get the award for the most polarizing item in fashion. I happen to love them but can see other’s disdain when not styled well. And even if that part is in the bag, there’s still the issue of fit and quality. For an item that appears so simple and basic, it’s easy to go wrong. In fact, it’s a challenge to find a good pair that are street worthy. Fabric is everything. Thick enough to shape and contour, but thin enough to lay smooth. No bunching at the knees please. Fashion brands should take note from some of the best in athletic wear – namely Beyond Yoga, ALO and Lululemon – all personal favs. There’s a reason their leggings have a cult like following.
Meanwhile, I’m on the search for a black legging that will wear well with oversized sweaters, blazers or peeking out from under dresses. Thick, matte black to give them a more upscale look that differentiates them from gym clothes. For starters, I’ll give WARDROBE.NYC, Toteme, and Vince a try. Other suggestions welcome.

I recently bought a pair of Power Stretch leggings by Sweaty Betty and will probably go back for another. The fabric is so soft and comfortable. Agree with you on the Lulu Align’s as well.
May I also add that I finally bought the Akris Punto stretch jersey pants that you raved about and love them!

Good to know. Haven’t tried Varley yet.

The Row leggings are my go to. Wore mine today with an oversized La Ligne sweater and Chanel flats. I own them in several weights. Another favorite is a pair of 10 year old Vince leggings. the new ones by Vince are simply not as good as the old ones.
Karima
Agree about the Vince. I tried to get a second pair and they’re very different.

I have Lululemon …also have Wolford and Anne Fontaine which I really like!
Karima
I can see Wolford being good for me! Didn’t know Fontaine made leggings but will at those too. Thank you.

Cuyana has a pair that looks good: Cuyana leggings

Karima I missed the Akris Punto
Stretch jersey pants which ones do you love? Thanks
Karima
The style is called Mara. They are more of a slim jersey pant than a tight legging though.

I’ve tried them all. I keep going back to J Crew. They tick all the boxes and you can’t beat the price.

Rag & Bone “Simone” pants are incredible. Waistband-less with a back zipper and high waist, they are a structured and crease-resistant legging-like option that looks polished and really sharp. They can be dressed up or down and great for travel since they don’t wrinkle and are so comfortable!
Julee
I agree with you. You can’t beat the J Crew legging.
