An article in the Financial Times talks about the shift in wearing foundation pieces as garment enhancers rather than old school attempts to camouflage body shape. The key for these base layers is not to shrink and form but to smooth and prevent lines.
I know I’ve experienced several frustrating occasions when getting dressed only to realize I don’t have the right undergarment. Specifically, a wrap dress with a plunging neckline needed a half slip for the skirted portion. A full slip would have ruined the top part of the dress. Have you tried shopping for a non-shaping, simple, pretty half slip lately? They’re not so easy to find. Or a seamless bra to wear under a silk blouse that adequately conceals without excess padding or trim?
After reading the article, I’m motivated to go through my closet and identify the challenging items in need of a specific undergarment, then start building a collection of essential foundation pieces. Having several options on hand should also erase the dilemma of what to wear under delicate fabrics, semi-sheer dresses or tops, and figure skimming clothes so I’ll be prepared to get dressed for any occasion.
Collections from Skims, Commando, and Negative Underwear are the lines I’m looking into. Recommendations welcome!

I really like this post! Thanks. Quick question for the experts out there: do you wear a bra under a slip that does not have any built-in support? Thanks so much!

Personally, I think it depends on if you actually need the support. I can get away with adhesive petals and a slip/camisole but if you need support, you need a bra. IMO.
