I took a long pause as I was reviewing the contents of my cart during a recent online shopping excursion. I don’t know how I got off track, but the pieces I selected were not really me. They were styles I admire on others, but when I tried to picture myself wearing them, not so much.
It reminded me of a recent quote in Grazia from Carine Roitfeld – a style icon whose fashion choices are narrowed down to what makes her feel at ease in her own skin.
‘I don’t have a huge wardrobe. I have 10 skirts like this,’ she says. ‘I stick to my style. I would look stupid in another.’
And that’s it. Knowing what works best for me and what I’m most comfortable wearing should always lead any potential purchase. Sounds obvious, but a good reminder none the less.

A very good reminder! Be authentic. Having style is not about having a lot but rather having the right items that you love, that fit and that you will wear. Thank you!

She is absolutely right. Otherwise, I feel as though I’m wearing someone else’s clothes.

So true! But sometimes my style is to diverge from my style….
Karima
Same for me.

Yes! I am most confident and comfortable in minimal, classic basics in neutrals. (Very Karima!) For a long time I worked towards a very edited wardrobe. “My style.” Occasionally I would fall in love with a print or a color but typically wouldn’t allow it. Until one day I realized life is short and I’m not a fashion icon and I don’t have to have hard and fast rules. I try not to invest a lot in prints and colors (I tire of them quickly) but I do feel free to enjoy them when I want to.
