It’s easy to dismiss pieces in a collection on first sight as unwearable or too far out of my comfort zone. Often though, those are the pieces that sort of linger in my mind and eventually, I obsess over. I’m looking back at the Céline Spring 16 runway for exactly that reason…actually two reasons.
One, I can’t get mind off the red chelsea boot. They’re out there, I know, but so cool. I admit, I have a soft spot for funky shoes, so these aren’t too far off from my taste, they’re just a bit bright…but I love them. They ground every look and are a great contrast to the beautiful, fluid slip dresses.
Second, with lingerie inspired looks dominating many of the Spring collections, I wanted to return to Céline for inspiration and question the wearability of this trend. I’m glad I did because I’ve decided how I will incorporate pieces into my wardrobe without looking like I’m wearing true lingerie. I’ll stay away from sheer lace on barely there or shiny silk/satin fabrics and look for pieces with substance. I think the contrast lace overlay on Céline’s pieces add a dimension that makes them so much more interesting than tonal lace…even sporty. The white pleated tank in what appears to be matte jersey with black lace is a perfect example…or the opposite, black with white lace. I love that top. Add a sporty shoe, casual pant and a jacket (I’d prefer cropped) and the look is perfect…and wearable. The head to toe silhouette is chic and feels very current.
Another piece from Céline, and others, that translates well for real life and will be on my shopping list is a fabulous white shirt that’s far from basic. Maybe something with extra volume or an unusual sleeve detail, I’m not sure yet but I’ll know it when I see it. This will be a key piece to pair with everything I already own, so I’ll choose carefully.
Lastly, even if I shy away from those haunting red chelsea boots, I know at the top of my wish list for spring will be a pair of red shoes. Céline showed pointy-toed flats in the same vibrant red and I spotted a beautiful red sandal at the Céline boutique recently that I can’t get out of my mind. I’m going back for a second look.
