Fall Travel: Start with The Basics

Fall Travel: Start with The Basics

I like to build my packing strategy around simple basics that aren’t defined by occasion. That way, I can style them endlessly and not be bored by a defined style mid-way through my trip. My fall suitcase will be filled with these silhouettes.

There’s always a place reserved in my suitcase for a simple day to night dress. This lightweight knit style from Theory is a great example. At $225, I’d grab it in other colors if it were available. I could toss on a sweater for a skirted look with it as quickly as I’d throw on a leather jacket. It’s incredibly versatile. I also like this long silhouette, again from Theory, in white.

Having several fine knit tops at my disposal is essential for unpredictable weather. I like pieces that are substantial enough to wear on their own. They provide a minimalist, streamlined look. Plus their weight makes it possible for tucking in and easy layering. (grey, white and black above)

I always pack a pair of black jeans and right now I’m loving the flattering fit of the cropped mini boot cut from Frame. The style wears well with both heels and flats. I also have them in blue denim. They’re a closet staple for me.

A small crossbody bag that converts to a clutch is a win-win for maximizing packing space. The small Bottega Veneta pouch is perfect and fills this need. Black is easy and chic although this would be an opportunity to add a little color.

I think most of my low-key pieces will feel fresh with a belt that adds a pop. I love Balenciaga’s BB buckle and think it looks especially stylish in white. To my eye, the BB reads more like a geometric knot rather than a designer logo. It’s a style that looks equally good over a dress or a pair of jeans. Another winner.

And now to the most important item to pack…comfortable shoes. Leather sandals will still be called for in September so I’ll save boots for cooler times. Of course, I’ll bring birks but I’ll need a pair of simple sandals to slip on as well. A knotted soft leather slide from J. Crew fits the bill. They’re a dead ringer for the Jimmy Choo’s I bought a few months ago at more than triple the price. Dang.

So so good and inspiring:), although will swap out a few black pieces for shades of navy and some khaki! Rarely wear /own any black clothing with the exception of the odd footwear or bag.
