Looking ahead to upcoming travel, I went through my list of essentials for packing with a focus on gear to comfortably carry me through destinations with potential rain.
The most important two items on that list are a trench coat and waterproof boots. Personally, I like the functionality of a longer trench coat plus it creates a more finished look. The neutral options are classic but a black coat would translate to a more dressed feel if necessary. Burberry and Barbour have carved a space for themselves in the field, but Khaite and Totême kick up the style notch. I’m looking at all and will report back on my finds.
A day to night water resistant boot is a must. Function, comfort and versatility take precedent in narrowing down options. The La Canadienne quilted combat boot hits those markers. The rugged sole adds traction and height which I always appreciate. The Totême rubber boots are chic in their minimalist approach but I’m not convinced a wide shaft makes sense for staying dry. I recently purchased Freda Salvador’s waterproof Chelsea in brown suede and will be testing their water resistance during this weeks rain.

Interesting that you included Cole Hahn! I have a waterproof leather pair of their Chelsea boots from 2013 that I’ve taken on trips. They look great with everything and the leather has held up remarkably well. Before my trip this November trip to Paris, my cobbler put on lug soles. They immediately looked both more contemporary and fantastic. Living in LA I try to be practical price wise on things I rarely get much use out of. The rain we’re currently having is a wonderful rarity.

Great idea to add the lug soles! A classic Chelsea will always stand the test of time. It’s nice to hear the Cole Haan’s held up so nicely.
I also tend to agree with you on price points of things that are rarely worn. I look at each situation independently.
Thanks for your input.
