I’d like to introduce a new genre of the little black dress to my closet with elements perfect for travel. I’d further separate the dresses into additional categories for resort, city, and countryside. They need to pack well with no bulk and provide versatility in styling.
The selection in this post are great examples for city travel. I like coverage and warmth hence the length and sleeves. I’m picturing them with boots, sandals or heels while coats, blazers, or leather jackets all serve as perfect toppers. The knits work especially well for both day or night and are seasonally appropriate. A belt, scarf, and jewelry provide endless styling options.
As soon as I think I’m tired of black, I’ll re-recognize its elegance and timelessness. There’s an elegant chic factor that will never go out of style.

A few more favorite LBTDs (Little Black Travel Dress) and how I’d style them.
A fabulous LBTD knit from Sportmax with subtle pointelle detailing. I’d wear with a Mary Jane pump to further the playfulness of the micro ruffle.
Relaxed silhouettes are perfect for travel allowing for a little give and take in the waistline. This knit jersey LBTD from Dorothee Schumacher flatters while focusing the detail on a generous blouson sleeve. I’d love to see this paired with Khaite’s structured knee-high boot. (also here)
A figure hugging compact ribbed knit from Victoria Beckham doesn’t need much adornment. This one is about shape, minimalism and a flash of skin. I’d wear with an interesting heeled sandal.
A shorter LBTD option from Dorothee Schumacher. When hemlines go shorter, necklines go higher for balance. This dress would be good belted, or not. For traveling, I’d wear with opaque tights.
Another favorite from Sportmax with a focus on a soft silhouette complimented by a darted waist. I’d wear with Valentino’s updated and ultra comfortable Tan-go pump.
A maxi from Isabel Marant Etoile that hangs loosely from the shoulder to the floor. A deep v-neckline and volumed sleeves add interest. Any shoe is good here since they’ll barely be noticed. A flat would even work but I prefer a little height. Toteme’s t-straps are lovely.
