I’m continually tweaking my closet to reflect my evolving style. Foundational pieces are the core but they occasionally need updating to feel in line with what’s current. When I spot a fresh staple, I consider not only how it will work with the other items I already own, but also its impact on giving outfits a fresh take. The designer sale at Bergdorf Goodman has plenty to choose from. I’m focusing on a few silhouettes that have recently proved their worth in my closet and snapping up additions from the sale. I’m thoughtfully building a crafted wardrobe of modern, timeless pieces. Here’s what’s on my shopping list:
Relaxed pants: For the times when I want to give jeans a break, but trousers feel a bit formal, I go for a slouchy relaxed pant. I wear them with sneakers, sandals or heels. They’re easy to dress up or down either going casual with sneakers and an oversized sweater or with a tailored blazer and sandals or heels. The comfort factor is arguably the draw, but I’m in it for the laid-back sophisticated vibe.

Day to night black top: I stock up on these because I wear them so often. I like to have a variety of styles to fit my mood and the occasion. The perfect piece is one that can be worn casually with loose jeans then shift gears to pair with elegant trousers or a fabulous skirt. I love the subtle sheer factor on the Max Mara turtleneck above.
Cropped jackets and cardigans: In leather, wool, tweed, cashmere – they’re workhorse pieces in my closet for good reason. Easy to style, incredibly versatile and they instantly add the finishing touch to an other wise basic outfit, which is pretty much my uniform. Having a selection on hand gives me the opportunity to complete my jeans and tee uniform without a thought. The details and silhouette matter. Look for pieces that have an interesting feature – as simple as the drawstring hem as on Theory’s gray flannel and make sure the silhouette looks just as good buttoned up as a top as it does a jacket.

Slim skirt: A great piece for day or night. I love it worn with an oversized sweater or tee and a flat shoe for a casual day look or dressed up with a tucked in blouse and heels. Again, details create standout pieces that make a quiet statement without being overly styled. The Row gathered side skirt above is a good example and a timeless piece.

A Classic Pump: This is when every detail matters…the shape of the heel, the height of the vamp, the angle, the toe and the material…otherwise it just falls flat. Gabriela Hearst gets it right in this gorgeous suede pump.
