We’re planning a trip to Japan and I’d love to hear any of your recommendations. We are starting in Fukuoka and making our way east eventually ending in Tokyo. I’m most excited about a stay at Gora Kadan in Hakone – an area between Kyoto and Tokyo highly regarded for its springs heated by volcanic rocks. The inn previously served as the summer villa of the Imperial Family until it was transformed in 1952 into a ryokan. I much prefer the countryside to big cities when traveling, so I think this portion of the trip will be a highlight. Natural beauty, a slower pace, and an authentic experience is the draw. Any favorite places, restaurants, tours to share are greatly appreciated.

Karima,
So excited for your trip. We did go to Hakone and it was a great retreat from the cities. We liked the Picasso museum. Wasn’t crazy about the smelly crater!
Any and all of the national parks are a must. Never seen such beauty. !

Gora Kadan is spectacular! The private traditional dinner in your room is 100% memorable. Highly recommend. Another unforgettable experience… Sumo practice in Tokyo. Amazing!

Thank you for the recommendation!

Highly recommend Benesse art site on Naoshima island as well. There’s a really spectacular Monet inspired garden there.

Yes! I’ve read great things about Benesse and am trying to squeeze it into the itinerary.

We stayed at Gora Kadan and loved it. We left from there and hiked up Mt. Fuji. I highly recommend it. It was a great adventure and such a beautiful site watching the sun rise from atop the mountain.

That sounds amazing! I can’t wait to see it all.

Just came back from Japan and stayed at Gora Kadan. It was a beautiful resort with an incredibly accommodating staff. We were there for one night with my family of 8 including a 2 year old. Our breakfast and dinner were excellent. We enjoyed our room immensely and the low key relaxing vibe all around. We went to the open air museum which was fabulous and could have spent a long time there for sure.
We only had one day/night. I imagine going all the warmer weather will make additional activities more appealing.
Have a great trip.

Karima, Naoshima Island is worth a stay for two days. The Benesse is well known so booking in advance is essential. But there are also other places to stay on the island if it is booked and so much to explore.
