The key to an easy to style wardrobe is having good basics. Knowing I can turn to pieces that effortlessly work without overthinking a strategy makes getting dressed quick and stress free. It’s a formula as straightforward as jeans and a tee that’s elevated with classic black pieces. They’re the perfect base to wear on their own or add layers to create a variety of looks. They’re essential for travel practically disappearing under scarves, coats and jackets, and make transitioning from day to evening a breeze.
For starters, a simple turtleneck in a classic silhouette is a must. I like having a couple on hand in various weights from cotton to cashmere. Regardless of the fabrication, for travel it must be light enough to layer under jackets. The one I’m wearing is perfect in all these ways. I also would pack a more fitted style, like this. Oversized, chunky knits, or exaggerated sleeves are great style statements at home, but I’d never pack one.
A black pant is equally key. I’m sold on a cropped style from Frame with stretch for comfort, practicality, and style. I’d pack them in a heartbeat plus another full length style – Frames’s Le Slim Palazzo and The Arrow are both good options depending on preferred fit. All are workhorses – easy to dress up or down, wear with sneakers, loafers, or heels. They’re indispensable.
A good percentage of my shoe wardrobe are stylish flats. Ballerinas, loafers, and Mary Janes are my favorites. For days when I’m planning on walking or standing a lot, loafers – especially with a thick or lug sole – are what I reach for first. But other times, I prefer a style that’s more elegant, like a ballerina flat. They’re perfect to slip on for a quick jaunt and look chic with a cropped pant. I’m wearing an older style by Louboutin but these are practically identical. Also look at these from Margaux and Jamie Haller.
For travel, I’d repeat this palette to include a small, soft brown bag. A Bottega Veneta pouch (updated style) continues to be my go to at home or away. I usually carry it is a clutch but can switch to a crossbody if desired. It holds just what I need for a dinner or quick outing. A Cuyuna Mini Zipper Tote is another great option and under $300. I love it’s size and top handle in addition to the crossbody strap. Occasionally, I’ll toss it in a larger tote to corral the necessities of what I’m lugging around that day.
An ecru blazer is a nice contrast to all black. No matter the fabrication, ecru adds interest. My go-to’s for fit and quality are from Nili Lotan in wool and TWP in linen. Both remain classics and never lose their style. I wear them with jeans and a tee most often, and if I want to look more polished the matching trouser (TWP linen) or (Nili Lotan wool).

A textured coat adds visual interest. I love how a beautiful coat elevates any look yet feels appropriate with jeans. A below the knee length adds versatility in styling options.

Such understated elegance! Your outfits and suggestions are beautiful! May I ask you what product you use on your hair to keep it slicked back without falling into your face? I can’t seem to find one that works. Thank you.

I just started using Easy Up Do and Modern Hairspray from Hair by Sam McNight. I buy it online from Violet Grey.

Thanks!

Love this whole look. I have the same Frame cropped pants, and love them so much, I got them for my daughter and granddaughter.
Do you remember the style name or number of your glasses? Very cool.
Karima
Hi Kathy. My glasses are the KAINE style from LOOK OPTIC. Love them. Very comfortable and lightweight. I’m wearing them in black but also the green and espresso.

A great post! Frame has become my go-to for denim, and I am definitely going to check out the trousers. I am obsessed with your Louboutin block-toe ballet flats. Is the width a true medium or do they run narrow?
Karima
They run TTS for me. I’m a 9.5 and they were comfortable out of the box.

Ditto ~ I’ve been wearing Frame for several years ~ mini boot crop & le high straight. Impressed how the black retain their color & also with the 27” inseam, which is a perfect length for those of us on the shorter side. The outfits in this post are almost identical to what I often wear. And your styling here, could also lend to another one of your fabulous packing for travel posts.

Love the tan shoes! I’m so happy that the Lanvin ballet shoe is back. Wore those for many years.

Excellent post!! You’re right, good basics in your wardrobe means you can always pull an outfit that makes you feel put together. The high quality, timeless pieces you selected are a perfect example. Thank you for the inspiration!!

Recently purchased the Frame le crop mini boot trousers on your recommendation. They are perfect! Great fit, fabric and overall look. I purchased the size 6 and find them perfect. The recommendation is to size up in these pants due to a smaller fit. Thank you for your recommendations.
