I’ve been wearing denim on denim a lot lately. It’s such an effortless outfit. It got me thinking about what jeans work best for this look which led to a closet edit of my denim – specifically any in a blue wash. I tried on every pair with a denim shirt and got rid of all the second tier styles that I rarely wear. It feels great to look in my closet and know how all the jeans fit and what shoes I’d wear them with. The edit also brought to my attention a style I’m missing – a long, straight, slim leg. Not skinny. Not tight. I’ve ordered a few and will report on my findings.
This week, I’m highlighting the jeans that made the edit and pairing each with a denim shirt. Some looks are better than others – you’ll see.
Today, I’m wearing a high rise, wide leg silhouette from MOTHER. I’ve had them for years and regardless of styles that come and go, I’ll keep these. They’re insanely comfortable (with stretch!) and no matter if I fluctuate a few pounds, they still fit. I almost always wear them with a tucked in shirt, blouse or cropped sweater to keep the focus on the high waist. The wider leg calls for a longer length meaning they’ll be paired with a slight heel for an elongated look. For those saying this style only works on tall figures, I say give them a try. There’s a reason MOTHER has them available in petite sizes and a bestseller.
Denim shirts are very on trend this season but have been a staple in my closet for years. I have one in a faded wash from ten years ago (similar) and just purchased a clean, darker wash style from Madewell. This is not an area I need to spend a lot on. The fit, wash, and softness of the fabric are what’s important. The Madewell shirt is true to size (wearing a medium) and under $100.
I’d wear this look with or without a belt. In some cases, the absence of a belt makes for a more streamlined appearance while in others I like a belt to add a more finished vibe.
Many of the pieces I share are collected over the years. If styles are no longer available, I’ll link to something very similar.
Wearing MOTHER jeans: THESE are the same style but in a slightly different wash and in PETITE HERE (also available in a dark grey wash)
Similar styles include THESE which sit a little lower on the waist, and THESE with a slightly more flared leg. I also like these from Citizens of Humanity and FRAME.
Wearing: Madewell shirt, The Row loafer (similar look and heel height here and here)

Like the look on you. Not sure if I will try it. Do the denim pieces need to be close in colors or can top or bottom be a different shade? Thanks
Karima
I think they need to have a similar look/feel. I like a faded shirt with a faded jean but they don’t have to match exactly. More to come this week on that with one look I’ll share that was not a success.
