I wish I packed more poplin shirts on my last trip. The amount of times I reached for one confirmed its versatility, comfort, and style. It’s a piece that made getting dressed simpler and everything else I wore look better. It’s the ultimate multitasker that handles every situation day to night, city to beach. Buttoned up, sleeves rolled, tucked into jeans for daytime or unbuttoned over a dress in place of a blazer for night. It also works as the easiest coverup thrown over a swimsuit or for casual running around tied at the waist over high-waisted shorts. The magic of its versatility lives in the proportions—slightly oversized is the way to go.

Now that I’m home, I want a couple more. I’d love one in tan, a fresh cornflower blue and a variegated stripe. And suddenly, the most basic staple is the most interesting thing I want to buy.
