COMBINATIONS THAT NEVER FAIL

COMBINATIONS THAT NEVER FAIL

cotton/linen sweater; Nili Lotan trousers n/a – try these or these; Devon Woodhill charm; Dorsey earrings; old Prada sandals – but these are almost identical

There are combinations that don’t require much thought. They’re the pieces I instinctively reach for on days when I want to look put together without overanalyzing. A tried and true process that feels almost like a formula and the way I get dressed most often. A couple of these looks have been on repeat lately. They’re so simple I almost didn’t bother writing about them. This post is a reminder to not overthink the process and rely on the simplicity of easy styling. The first is a monochrome ivory look. A summer-weight cotton linen sweater with wide-leg trousers (old Nili Lotan) in the same pale tone. Sticking with one color removes the question of what goes with what and is a strong start for an easy stylish look.

The second is a poplin shirt with jeans, which needs little explanation. Straightforward, but the details matter. I like the shirt oversized, unbuttoned, sleeves rolled, and tucked in. I want it to project a relaxed vibe and those small adjustments are what make the difference between looking effortless and overthought. I’m wearing the Celia jean from Nili Lotan – a brand I consistently rely on for fit, style and quality. The medium rise hugging the hips lands perfectly to contain the volume of the shirt, while the wide leg skims without clinging. A low heel helps create an elongated look. Adding a belt is optional.

Wearing a shirt open is an invitation to play with necklaces. I almost always layer a few chains with either pearls, diamonds or beads. It all depends on my mood. With a stack of necklaces, I keep the earrings simple and close to the ear. I’m asked about the Odette every time I wear them.

Poplin shirts are a closet essential I’ve been collecting for years. They’re a year-round basic worn layered under sweaters, as a cover-up, and always with jeans. A reader recently asked for options under $200, and there are plenty of good ones. COS and Madewell are reliable at that price point, and Veronica Beard is worth a look for something a little more structured.

The best part of having a few trustworthy combinations like these is eliminating the stress of what to wear. These pairings consistently do that for me.
