AMSTERDAM IS ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA

AMSTERDAM IS ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA

From the archives. Originally published in 2019.

Amsterdam is one of my favorite cities. I’d never pass on an opportunity to visit. Along with updating my When in Amsterdam post, I’m including a few items I’d bring along for an autumn trip.

Of course, comfortable walking shoes are the anchor of any travel outfit, and Birkenstocks usually rise to the top of that shortlist. I’ve become a bit obsessed with a few of their recent collaborations (love my raffia!) including the black leather Valentino’s above. They will be a core item for my packing strategy this fall. I swooped them up as soon as I saw Linda Wright wearing them on an Instagram post.

Fall temperatures waver throughout the day, so a cardigan would cover a morning or evening chill, plus they’re an easy piece to dress up or down. Other essentials include black jeans (a staple on every packing list) and a chic cross-body bag (similar) for their endless styling options.

While shopping abroad, I prefer to source things made locally and not readily available in the states. Bringing home something small as a memento or gift is usually my focus. Netherlands based jeweler Bron is a good place to start. For the home, Marie-Stella-Maris offers several products including one infused with their iconic Objects d’Amsterdam fragrance. Or, stop by the studio of Annemieke Boots to pick up an item (or start a collection) from her beautifully crafted ceramic pieces.

sweater, jeans, sandals, bag, tourmaline earrings, candle, ceramics, book

We were there for New Year’s a few years back and stayed at the Banks Mansion which was lovely and in a great location. The museums and food are wonderful, but the cyclists are a force unto their own.
